A Coffee-and-Bourbon Granita for Watch Parties and Civic Meetups
Community screenings, debate-night gatherings and neighbourhood discussion groups tend to run long, and a simple make-ahead dessert keeps people around the table talking. A coffee granita lifted with a splash of bourbon is one of the easiest options: it needs no ice-cream maker, takes only a few minutes of hands-on work and can be served straight from the freezer.
The basic method
- Brew strong coffee. Espresso or double-strength drip coffee works best, because freezing dulls flavour. Stir in sugar while it is hot so it dissolves fully, and sweeten to taste.
- Add the bourbon sparingly. Alcohol lowers the freezing point, so a little goes a long way. Too much and the mixture will stay slushy instead of forming crisp crystals.
- Freeze in a shallow dish. A metal baking tin chills fastest. After about an hour, scrape the edges toward the centre with a fork.
- Scrape again every 30–45 minutes until the whole dish is fluffy and icy, usually a few hours in total.
Serving ideas for a small menu
- Top each glass with lightly whipped cream to balance the bitterness.
- Add a pinch of flaky salt or a little orange zest for contrast.
- Pair it with shortbread or biscotti for something to dunk.
Keep everyone included
Because this dessert contains both caffeine and alcohol, make a second tray without bourbon, and consider one made with decaffeinated coffee for evening events. Label each clearly so guests can choose for themselves. That matters if younger attendees, drivers or anyone avoiding alcohol or caffeine will be present. Serving alcohol at a public or organised event can also come with local rules, so check what applies to your venue before you plan the menu.
If you are hosting a screening of one of our civic explainer videos, a relaxed setting with something cool to eat can make the conversation afterwards flow more easily. For upcoming gatherings and discussion ideas, see our events page.
